Library 101

Library 101

Those crazy librarians of “hi-fi sci-fi library” fame are at it again!

David Lee King and Michael Porter are working on a new song and video called “Library 101.”  They’re asking for members of the library community to submit pics or videos of themselves with some form of the 101 combination.  In order to participate, simply post your contribution to flickr and tag it “library101.”

The new video will debut in October 2009 at a special ‘Connecting Through “Lights, Camera, Action”‘ session at the Internet Librarian Conference in Monterey, California.

My First Tattoo

My First Tattoo

I wouldn’t have participated in this meme except that Terry said that no one would and I really feel like being contrary right now…

1.  Who was your FIRST prom date?
I didn’t go to prom.

2. Do you still talk to your FIRST love?
Yes, I do.

3. What was your FIRST alcoholic drink?
Boone’s Farm, over in Italy. We used to drink in the gym up on the stage and in the girls’ bathroom. Fun times.

4. What was your FIRST job?
I was a summer hire at Aviano Air Force Base in Italy and I worked at the post office stamping mail.

5. What was your FIRST car?
A Pontiac Fiero, a beautiful car…which I drove for 6 months without a license. The day after I became legal, I crashed into a tree, totaled the car and walked around with the imprint of the steering wheel on my chest for almost 2 months.

6. Who was the FIRST person to text you today?
My work study student to find out if I’d be at work today.

7. Who is the FIRST person you thought of this morning?
I was completely selfish and thought of myself. I was incredibly tired and was desperately wishing I could pull the covers over my head and go back to sleep.

8. Who was your FIRST grade teacher?
I don’t know what grade she taught but the first teacher I remember actually liking was Ms. Cathy Devine.

9. Where did you go on your FIRST ride on an airplane?
I moved to Italy with my family.

10. Who was your FIRST best friend; do you still talk?
See number 2; he found me on Facebook and reconnected me with his sister, who was my first best friend but became more like a sister.

11. Where was your FIRST sleep over?
See the above.

12. Who was the FIRST person you talked to today?
My children who were begging for a ride to the bus stop.

13. Whose wedding were you in the FIRST time?
My own. We went to the Justice of the Peace.

14. What was the FIRST thing you did this morning?
Slammed my hand on the alarm clock because it went off way too early.

15. What was the FIRST concert you ever went to?
I’ve never been to a concert before.

16. FIRST tattoo?
About 5 or 6 years ago, for an anniversary gift. Tony and I went and got tattoos. It’s a purple, black and gold butterfly.

17. First piercing?
My mother had our ears pierced when we were about 3 months old.

18. FIRST foreign country you visited?
See number 9. My stepfather was in the Air Force.

19. FIRST movie you remember seeing?
Carrie, when I was about 11 or 12. My mom and stepfather blocked the opening shower scene and I waited for years to find out what the girls were throwing at Carrie. I was so disappointed when I found out they were sanitary napkins and stunned that that was the part of the movie my parents chose to block.

20. When was your FIRST detention?
Never happened because I was smart enough not to get caught.

21. What was the FIRST state you lived in?
I was born in D.C. but since that’s not a state, I’ll go with Texas; my birth father was in the Army.

22. Who was your FIRST roommate?
Not counting my sisters, a girl named Janay when I was a student at Dillard University.

23. If you had one wish, what would it be?
I’m not sure what this has to do with firsts so I’m not going to answer.

24. What is something you would learn if you had the chance?
See the above.

25. Who do you think will be the next person to post this?
I’m going to go with Terry on this one and say no one.

Jumping up and down…I was tagged, I was tagged!

I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy because Baldgeedkinmd tagged me for this meme.  Now I feel like one of the chosen ones.

This meme was started by Meredith Farkas…

1.  How or why did I start to get into blogging?

About a year ago I took a social networking course offered by Infopeople and taught by none other than Mrs. Farkas herself.  One of our assignments included starting a blog.  I was initially hesitant because I didn’t think I had much to say and I certainly didn’t feel I was qualified to add to the conversations going on in Library Land.  However, it was this post that gave me the confidence boost I needed.  Granted, Meredith told us to comment on each other’s posts so that helped but I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who weren’t enrolled in the course who either commented or sent me emails requesting more information. Knowing that there were people out there who valued my opinion sent my confidence level through the roof and a blogger was born…

2.  How did I gain an audience?

It happened very slowly…smile.  I kept writing but I also started checking out the blogs of folks other than the people in the course with me and I started commenting.  Once I started commenting, others would come and see what I had to say and they would leave comments.  I’ve tried to do more to encourage commenting but I think on that end I’m probably failing but I do enjoy the interaction.  But I have to admit to really wishing I knew how to do a cartwheel when I found out someone accesses my blog through Google Reader. Whoever you are, you rawk!

3.  What advice would you give to new bloggers who want to make a name for themselves in the biblioblogosophere?

My advice would be:

  • Have something to say
  • Even if you don’t think you have an audience, write like you do
  • Read other people’s blogs and comment (not just to leave a comment but to contribute to the conversation)
  • Market yourself: use your blog’s url as your calling card
  • Have fun

So now I’m going to tag: Beaver Archivist, Spinstah and Librarians Matter.

I wondered what I could possibly post after my memorial to my father and then I read this meme by Colleen and I thought how appropriate.  My dad was a big time music lover who introduced me to funk, r&b and soul.  So in my final tribute to him, I offer this meme…

According to  Rudy’s Ramblings the meme’s instructions are to go to Music Outfitters and type in the year you graduated from high school (or first year, if still in high school) into the search function.  Retrieve the top 100 songs from that year.  Strike through the songs you hate(d), underline the songs you like(d), bold the songs you love(d) and leave blank the ones you either don’t remember or don’t care about.  Annotate at will.

I graduated in 1991 (go Saints!  I didn’t graduate with y’all but you know the deal), so here goes…

Thanks to Friendfeed, I found out about WarMaiden‘s new meme in which she dares librarians to write an unofficial biography of themselves that they’d like to send out but can’t due to political correctness, the desire to obtain employment or, as in my case, the sincere belief that people really can’t handle the awesomeness that is me.

Anyway, I decided to play along with all of my other Twitter and Friendfeed friends and come up with my own unofficial biography.

Dani (also known as curiouschild and/or curiouschild34 on the interweb — but not all over, there’s another curious child out there who makes me blush–ok, they’re song lyrics, but still…) is a librarienne extraordinaire with the research skills of a librarian, the preservation skills of an archivist, the organizational skills of a mother and the domestic skills of a Stepford wife.  When not manning the Reference Desk or trying to organize the Archives, I can be seen doling out fashion advice to the many contenders I see vying for positions on What Not to Wear.  Known for my flashy bags (purses, for those of you not in the know), I can be seen strolling around campus in impossibly high heels (nothing like a pair of platform peep toes), while juggling an armload of books…

My hobbies include people watching, resisting the urge to correct people’s grammar in their email and returning it to them and trying to maintain a healthy distance between the local pastry shop and myself.

I know she didn’t tag me and I know that most people hate memes, but I wanted to do one.   It sort of reminds me of high school when we used to pass around the ubiquitous slam book and pray that no one recognized our handwriting.  So, anyway, here it is, my contribution:

1.  Who am I?  A diva with the research skills of a librarian, the preservation skills of an archivist, the organizational skills of a mother and the domestic skills of a Stepford wife.

2.  Who knows me best?  Tough one, there are times when I truly don’t even know myself.

3.  How old am I?  Or how old do I feel?  Technically, I’m 35 but I like to add 5 years to my age.  It makes people say things like “You look really good…”  I know it’s fishing, but I’ll take a compliment anyway I can.

4.  The most important thing in my life is hanging out with my family.

5.  I always carry my keys, cell phone, cosmetic bag with all the essentials and id (in case I’m in an accident, don’t want to end up a Jane Doe).

6.  Something I always do is check my email.  You never know when you might get that long awaited message… 🙂

7.  I’m at my happiest when I’ve checked my kids’ rooms and made sure that they are all sleeping soundly and then I walk into the kitchen and realize that they haven’t done the dishes and I get to wake them up!

8.  On a Monday morning, you can find me slamming my hand down on the alarm clock wishing it was Saturday.

9.  My favorite mode of transportation, since my promised flying car is unavailable, my red Dodge Caliber with the license plate cover that reads “Super Sexy Nerd Girl.”

10.  My eyes are brown.

11.  My favorite material possession is my Fall Patchwork Coach bag.

12.  To relax, I like to watch TV Land.  Sort of goofy, but it works.

13.  The town I live in is a cross between Mayberry and Pleasantville.

14.  My worst habit is that I firmly believe in the power of retail therapy.

15.  My guilty pleasure is that I listen to Big and Rich and Gretchen Wilson

16.  When I look at someone, the first thing I see is their eyes.

17.  I think the sound of a newborn crying is alternately beautiful and annoying.

18.  One thing I can live without is parents who can’t control their kids.

19.  One thing people don’t know about me:  I’m shy.

20.  My life is not my own.
